Beyond Workflow Automation: The Rise of Intelligence-Driven Insurance Operations

By InsurTech Express - 19 October 2026

For years, insurance technology has focused on a familiar challenge: How do we move work through the organization faster?

But AI is introducing a more consequential question:

What if the technology could also understand the work?

Traditional insurance systems are largely built around data, rules, screens and workflows, with people responsible for interpreting information and moving each process forward. The emerging generation of AI-native platforms is beginning to change that model—shifting from simply automating tasks to creating decision-ready intelligence.

This distinction matters.

In underwriting, for example, AI agents can ingest submissions and supporting documents, extract and validate data, identify missing or conflicting information, enrich the file with additional sources, and evaluate risks against an organization’s own guidelines and appetite. Instead of spending significant time assembling the risk picture, underwriters can begin with a more complete view and focus their expertise on judgment and decision-making.

The same principle can extend beyond underwriting into claims, policy servicing and customer engagement.

From automation to intelligence

This is the space Imaginist, the newest member of the InsurTech Express community, is exploring.

Imaginist is building an AI-native intelligence layer for insurance operations, combining insurance domain knowledge, business rules, data and AI agents to help carriers, MGAs, agencies and brokers turn incoming information into actionable intelligence.

One particularly important concept behind the approach is human-governed AI.

The objective isn’t to remove insurance expertise from the process. It is to allow AI agents to handle more of the operational work—reading files, validating information, identifying exposures and applying defined business rules—while keeping human professionals responsible for judgment, oversight and direction.

That distinction becomes especially important in regulated environments. Decisions need more than speed; they need traceability. Imaginist’s approach maintains the evidence behind data and signals and makes visible which rules passed, failed and why.

A broader industry shift

The bigger story may not be any individual AI capability.

It is the transition from workflow-driven software to intelligence-driven operations.

As AI becomes embedded deeper into insurance processes, the competitive question may increasingly shift from “How much can we automate?” to “How effectively can we combine machine intelligence with human expertise?”

That is a conversation worth watching—and one we’re pleased to have Imaginist bring to the InsurTech Express community.
